About MexPath

The Person Behind the Plan

I'm Sam — an American who actually moved to Mexico, figured it out the hard way, and built MexPath so you don't have to.

In 2022, my wife and I made the decision to leave the United States and build our life in Mérida, Yucatán. We weren't running from anything — we were running toward something: a slower pace, a lower cost of living, a culture we both loved, and a real shot at the life we actually wanted. But actually making that move? That was a different story.

The internet was full of advice — and almost all of it was either wrong, outdated, or coming from someone with a financial incentive to steer us in a specific direction. Facebook groups were a minefield of conflicting opinions. YouTube was dominated by people who'd been in Mexico for three months and were already selling courses. And the "relocation companies" we found all had cozy referral deals with real estate agents, immigration lawyers, and property managers. Nobody was giving us straight answers because nobody was getting paid to be honest.

So we figured it out ourselves. Visa applications, temporary residency, permanent residency, RFC registration, IMSS enrollment, opening bank accounts, finding a notario, understanding property law, importing our dog, setting up utilities — every single step, learned through trial, error, and a lot of patience. Some things we nailed. Some things we got wrong and had to fix. All of it taught us something.

MexPath exists because I kept meeting people at the beginning of that same journey — smart, capable people who were stuck in the research spiral and getting pulled in different directions by people with something to sell. I realized I could save them months of confusion with a single honest conversation. No commission. No upsell. Just clarity from someone who's been through it and has nothing to gain except knowing I helped.
